Former Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Mr. Carlos Velloso refused, on Friday afternoon (17), the invitation by President Michel Temer to take over the Minister of Justice.
In a statement made to the press, Velloso said that “conflict of interest” prevented him from accepting the charge. The Ministry must be vacant until the end of the month, with the probable departure of Mr. Alexandre de Moraes, appointed to take a seat in the Supreme Court. Since 2006, when he retired in the Supreme Court, the former judge holds a law firm in Brasilia.
In a statement, Velloso said he will remain available to help Mr. Temer in other ways. “I will continue to be available to Temer Presidente, a friend about 40 years, to help otherwise the mission that fate has given him the constitutional dedicated to replace Brazil in the path of economic development with social justice. In 51 years public service, and among these 40 as judge, I was assured of my share of service to the public cause, “according to the statement.
The Palacio del Planalto has not commented on Velloso’s decision.
