The European Union has informed Mercosur negotiators  that an agreement to open  the European agricultural products market will depend on an agreement on geographical designation (wines, cheeses, hams and some other products), patents, health and data protection. The two blocks will meet  later in March (20 to 24) in Buenos Aires.

According to the EU, the value of agricultural products protected by the European Geographical Indications program is over $ 55 billion in 2010.  In recent years, Brazil has conceded greater importance to the registration of geographical indications, due to the added value it can provide in exports.
