Mr. Emilio Odebrecht, the patriarch of Group Odebrecht told (Monday, March 13) to Federal Court judge Sérgio Moro that    “off-book accounting”  payments in electoral campaigns is a costumary  and long-rooted practice in Brazil. He testified as defense witness to his son Marcelo Bahia Odebrecht, who has been incarcerated since June 19, 2015 on charges of corruption (Lava Jato Operation).

Mr. Emilio Odebrecht statements suggesting the aparent ‘normalcy’ of such  “off-book accounting”  payments are similar to those made by lawyers of politicians kept by Lava Jato anti-corruption net. At the same time, when it comes to light that it is an ancient practice, it opens way to deeper investigation on past administrations and politicians.
