Michel Temer’s administration suffered a major defeat in the House of Representatives on Tuesday (18). Government cannot approve the Labor Reform acceleration process into plenary.
Only 230 deputies voted in favor of the government project, and 163 voted against.
At least 257 of the 513 deputies would be needed for the reform to proceed in an emergency. The scoreboard revealed that deputies from the Temer government’s support base voted against to speed up project processing .
The defeat is symbolic because the Planalto Palace wanted to use Labor Reform approval as an example of having enough votes to approve the Pension Reform, another Temer legislative priority in 2017. Because it is an amendment to the Constitution, reforms require the votes of 60 % Of Members.
After the rejection of the speed up procedure, the reform should only be voted on the House special committee in about two weeks. The government wanted to approve it in committee and in plenary next week. The defeat should delay the processing of Pension Reform.
