The main Brazilian institution charged with the protection indigenous peoples, Funai, is going through a major crisis today following the substantial cut in its budget by the government.

As a consequence, the agency had to close dozens of its regional offices and now lacks the financial means to undertake concrete actions to provide services to indigenous peoples.

This reduced protection is leading to an increasing number of “land invasions by land grabbers, loggers and miners in indigenous territories” and a rise of homicides related to rural land disputes this year.

Moreover, a congressional commission led by Ruralist forces is pushing for Funai staff, among other indigenous rights defenders, to be prosecuted for alleged crimes, a further attempt to publicly discredit the institution.
