Eight main Brazilian trade union confederations called a general strike for December 5, to protest against the pension reform.

According  to a bill to be voted by Congress on December 6, a minimum of 15 years of contributions will be required from private sector workers, compared to 25 years in the previous draft and 15 currently. Public servants will have a 25-year minimum, and all workers will need to work 40 years to retire on full pension.

The bill maintains the minimum retirement age of 65 years for men and 62 years for women, a key proposal for reducing the cost of Brazil’s pension system, which is the main cause of a gaping government budget deficit.
