Expectations are that a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the European Union and Mercosur should be signed in December, but negotiations on meat quotas are far from solved.
The import volume offered by the European Commission, of 70,000 tonnes equivalent with bone, is what keeps the closure of this interlocking trade agreement in check. Mercosur wants to send 380,000 tons of meat to Europe.
Argentinian Mario Ravettino, chairman of ABC, said to newspaper Clarin that as a bloc Mercosur totally rejects the European offer of 70,000 tonnes (35,000 tonnes cooled and 35,000 frozen).
“This week we met with the Minister of Agroindustry, Luis Etchevehere, and we express a categorical position in front of him: we do not accept the European offer under any point of view since we consider that it should be substantially superior”, comments Ravettino.
