Court decision made Eternit paralyze asbestos activities in Brazil

The company Eternit announced on Tuesday (5) to its shareholders that in the face of the decision of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), the company paralyzed the activities of its subsidiaries SAMA (mining) and Precon Goias (a manufacturer of asbestos cement tiles) until further decision on the matter.

On November 29, the STF declared inconsistent  a 1995 federal law article that permitted the extraction, industrialization, commercialization and distribution of chrysotile asbestos (white asbestos) in the country

The company  informed that other units of production of cement tiles will continue to operate normally only with the synthetic fiber of polypropylene produced in the unit of Manaus.

In the statement, Eternit reinforced its commitment to work within the best practices of safety, care for the environment, always committed to the community and its employees, according to the norms and laws that govern the sector

A week ago Eternit announced that by the end of next year it would stop using asbestos in the production of cement tiles.
