The appeal trial of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for corruption, and money laundering was scheduled for January 24, 2018. Once the most popular presidente of the country’s recente history, Lula – as he is universally known – has been sentenced to nine years and six months in prison after being found guilty. He remained free pending ab appeal.
The Workers’ Party and Lula himself – who has been traveling in campaign all over Brazil in recent months – tried to politicize the verdict and will do it again in the new trial, seeking to present the former president as a victim of Judiciary coup.
But the party and the former presidente always felt themselves above the law, in spite Workers’ Party administrations in Brazil were the most corrupt ever, as it has been shown by anti-corruption operation Lava-Jato (CarWash).
