Environmental cost growth choke off potential for new hydroelectrics

The socio-environmental costs to build large hydroelectric plants have almost quadrupled in the last 20 years, according to a study by the Instituto Acue Brasil.

The share of these expenses in the total budget of the projects increased from 5.7% in the 1990s to 20% between 2010 and 2014.

Expenses that grew the most were related to the purchase of land, the relocation of affected populations and the cleaning of reservoirs.
