Worker’s Party will react violently if Lula’s conviction in confirmed
Brazil’s Workers’ Party (PT) will not accept a court decision that eventually confirms that former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is guilty of corruption and money laundering.
Trying to intimidate the judges of the federal appeal court that will decide on the matter on Wednesday (January 24), PT is preparing massive public protest gatherings in Porto Alegre (where the court will meet) and in other 40 cities.
The Party, through its main leaders – among them former foreign minister Celso Amorim – said that Lula simply can not go to jail, under the argument that he has a huge popular support and is strongly positioned on polls for next October Presidential elections. The chairman of PT, senator Gleisi Hoffman, said that if former President’s conviction is confirmed that would generate violence and even death.
