(Reuters) – Brazil’s Senate President Eunício de Oliveira confirmed on Friday that the federal government will intervene to improve security in the state of Rio de Janeiro, which has been struggling to contain a wave of violence.

Oliveira said the federal government will name an army general to oversee Rio de Janeiro’s security forces including the police, the fire department and the state’s intelligence department.
