Mercosur and European Union are closing definitive Agreement

President Michel Temer said on Sunday (11) that after 19 years of negotiations, Mercosur and the European Union are close to concluding a “definitive” agreement. He participated on Sunday (11) of the inauguration ceremony of Chile’s President-elect, Sebastián Piñera, in Valparaiso.

According to Temer, there are still some points left to resolve and close a free trade agreement with Europeans. Mercosur seeks to reduce tariff barriers for products such as grains and food, of which they are major exporters.

“We have some small points to resolve yet, but the European Union and Mercosur foreign ministers will meet very soon. I think, after 19 years, that’s what Macri and I agreed on. We may finally close the Mercosur agreement and the European Union, “said the president, after meeting with the president of Argentina, Maurício Macri.

Michel Temer also spoke with Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski about a possible agreement between Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Venezuela with the Pacific Alliance, formed by Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru.

The agreement with the neighboring bloc revolves around the increase in trade between countries, considered still low. It is also aimed at reducing tariffs, customs cooperation, promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises, reduction of non-tariff barriers and facilitation of trade in goods and services.

“I talked to the president of Peru [Pedro Pablo Kuczynski] very quickly, but with a view to establishing an alliance between Mercosur and the Pacific Alliance,” he said.

Temer participated in the inauguration ceremony of Sebastian Piñera accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aloysio Nunes. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Brazil is the main destination for Chilean investments in the world, with a stock of US $ 31 billion, and its first commercial partner in South America. Chile, in turn, is the second partner trade in Brazil in the region, with a commercial exchange of around US $ 8.5 billion in 2017.

“I came to greet President-elect Piñera, not only because we have a very strong business relationship. It is more than 8 billion dollars, our business relationship, which incidentally, increased a lot in 2015, 2016 and 2017, “said Temer

This is the second time Piñera holds the position. The first time was in the period from 2010 to 2014. The new agent, takes over the post of Michelle Bachelet for a term that goes until 2022.
