The dissemination of false news may jeopardize the democratic process, to the point of resulting in the annulment of a lawsuit, if they have significantly influenced the final result. The statement was made by the president of the Superior Electoral Court, Luiz Fux, at the opening of the seminar Social, Political and Economic Impacts of Fake News. The event in Brasilia is conducted by the Brazilian Radio and Television Association (Abratel) to discuss the role of journalism in combating the dissemination of false information in environments such as social networks.
“Fake news pollutes the democratic environment, with the candidate revealing his anger against the other, rather than his own qualities,” Fux said. According to him, there is also “the possibility of annulment of the election, if the result of the elections are the result of these false news.” Abratel president Marcio Novaes said that WhatsApp could be the main fake news publisher in these elections and the best way to fight false news “is by doing real journalism.” “Gossip has always existed, but we need to be aware of this evil,” he warned.
