The IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) released on Wednesday Aug. 29th the new estimate of the Brazilian population. According to the institute, the country counts in 2018 with more than 208.5 million inhabitants.
The number is 0.4% higher than the 207.6 million recorded last year. The updated number is 208,494,900.
The 26 capitals of the country and the Federal District, together, shelter 49.7 million inhabitants. The number represents 23.8% of the country’s total population. In fact, the 12 most populous cities of Brazil are capitals. These are the following:
- Sao Paulo – 12.2 million
- Rio de Janeiro – 6.7 million
- Brasilia – 3 million
- Salvador – 2.9 million
- Fortaleza – 2.6 million
- Belo Horizonte – 2.5 million
- Manaus – 2.1 million
- Curitiba – 1.9 million
- Recife – 1.6 million
- Goiania- 1.5 million
- Belem- 1.5 million
- Porto Alegre – 1.5 million
In addition to them, five other cities in the country have an estimated population of more than 1 million people. There are two cities in São Paulo, two capitals and one city in Rio: Guarulhos-SP (1.4 million), Campinas-SP (1.2 million), São Luís-MA (1.1 million), São Gonçalo-RJ , 1 million) and Maceió-AL (1 million).
On the other hand, there are three cities of the country with less than 1 thousand people, being the least populous of the country. They are: Serra da Saudade-MG (786), Borá-SP (836) and Araguainha-MT (956).
Population by states
Three Southeast states are at the top of the list of the most populous. São Paulo leads, with 45.5 million inhabitants. Then comes Minas Gerais, with 21 million inhabitants; and Rio de Janeiro, with 17.2 million.
In the Northeast, Bahia has the largest population in the region, with 14.8 million inhabitants. In the South, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul almost tie in the number of people, with 11,348,937 and 11,329,605 of inhabitants, respectively.
In the North, the state of Pará is the most populous, with 8.5 million inhabitants; and in the Center-West, the State of Goiás, with 6.9 million inhabitants.
Among other objectives, the new estimate will be used to calculate the quotas of the participation funds of States and municipalities. The data have reference date on July 1, 2018 and are organized by States, Federal District and municipalities.
