The increase is due to the more remunerative cereal prices, which encouraged planting, as well as the need to rotate crops in soybean plantations to avoid pests
The State of Santa Catarina is expected to harvest 2.77 million tons of maize in the 2018/2019 harvest, 8% more than in the previous season, according to the Center for Socioeconomics and Agricultural Planning (Epagri / Cepa)
Average productivity of the plantations is estimated at 8.15 tons per hectare.
“Producers in Santa Catarina are investing more and more in technology and, if the weather is favorable, we will make the 2018/2019 harvest a record in production,“ said Secretary of State for Agriculture and Fisheries Airton Spies. The residents of Santa Catarina should grow corn with 340.3 thousand hectares, an area of 5.8% higher.
According to Epagri / Cepa, the increase is due to the more remunerative cereal prices, which encouraged planting, and also the need to crop crops in soybean plantations to avoid pests.
The Santa Catarina agribusiness consumes approximately seven million tons of corn per year – more than four million tons are brought from other states.
