The Director of Institutional Relations of the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), Ariel Antonio Mendes, was inaugurated as a Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Veterinary Medicine (ABRAMVET) in chair number 5, whose patron is Professor Cicero de Moura Neiva. The solemn session of inauguration took place on November 29, in Rio de Janeiro.
According to the President of the Milton Thiago de Mello Academy, the election of Mendes was a recognition of “moral, ethical and professional values, and for the contribution and leadership for the development of national livestock, teaching, research and national and international leadership in the area of Brazilian poultry farming. “
“The homage is fair and well-deserved since Professor Ariel had a significant contribution to make the Brazilian poultry industry reach the current level of excellence and that today is a world reference in terms of quality and sanity,“ said Francisco Turra, president of ABPA.
Born in Lages (SC), Mendes is a graduate of the Federal University of Paraná, with a Master’s degree from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, a Ph.D. from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and a postdoctoral degree from the University of Arkansas in the United States.
He is a retired Professor of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science at UNESP – Universidade Estadual Paulista, Campus de Botucatu, SP. He held several positions at the University, such as Department Head, Undergraduate Course Coordinator, Vice-President and President of CONVIDUNESP, Board of Vice-Directors of UNESP.
In addition to an intense academic and research activity developed at Unesp, Mendes held several positions in the association, being president of the Apinco Foundation of Science and Technology Poultry (FACTA) for 10 years, president of the Brazilian Union of Poultry (UBA) and president of the Latin American Poultry Association (ALA).
Throughout his career, Mendes received several honors, such as “Outstanding Professional of Brazilian Poultry“ (2003), “Personality of the Technical Area of Brazilian Poultry“ (2004) and “Highness of Poultry of Brazil“ (2006). 2011 became part of the Hall of Fame of Latin American Aviculture and in 2012 received the title of Professor Emeritus of FMVZ of UNESP and in 2013 received again the title of “Professional Poultry Professional“ and in November 2018
