At least 174 Venezuelan soldiers have fled their positions and fled to Brazil and Colombia since Saturday, when agents of the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB) made strings of isolation on the Venezuelan border with the two countries, preventing the entry of humanitarian aid, and suppressed, in some cases with violence, demonstrations of support to opposition leader Juan Guaido, who declared himself interim president of the country in January.

Of these cases, 167 were recorded in the passages linking Venezuelan regions to the Colombian states of Norte Santander and Arauca, which received 157 and 10 deserters, respectively. In Pacaraima, Brazil, seven sergeants from the Armed Forces of the neighboring country sought protection.
