Conab Announces Second Coffee Estimate With the Production of 50.92 Million Bags

Brazil is going to harvest of 50.92 million bags of coffee benefited in 2019, adding the arabica and conilon species. This is the second estimate for the product, made by Companhia Nacional de Abastecimento (Conab) and released on Thursday (16), in Brasília. The result represents a reduction of 17.4% compared to 2018. The decline is due to the negative biennially in coffee plantations, a natural phenomenon that occurs with the crop and causes its productivity to be higher in one year and lower in the following year. However, Brazil is still the world’s leading producer and exporter of the crop.

According to the survey, the harvest has already begun and this production remains the largest during the period of a negative biennially. Arabica coffee, which represents a production of 72% of the total and is more influenced by biennial, should reach 36.98 million bags, a 22.1% reduction compared to the previous season.

The conilon coffee production is estimated at 13.94 million bags, a decrease of 1.7% compared to 2018. In the case of conilon, this projection is mainly due to the expectation of reduction of production in Bahia and Minas Gerais, which decreased area and presented lower estimates of average productivity, and in Espírito Santo, which also decreased productivity due to the climate.

The total area cultivated in the country with both species totals 2.16 million hectares. Of this total, 14.8% are in training and 85% in production. In the current crop, the area under production was reduced by 1.1%, while the area under formation increased by 8.7%. According to the study, because it is a crop of the negative biennial, the producers take advantage to carry out cultural dealings in the crops and, consequently, to reduce the area in production.

Another highlight in this Bulletin is the mapping that Conab is carrying out with the coffee data in the main producing regions. The study uses georeferencing technologies, which collaborate with area estimates.
